Johann Friedrich Herbart, one of the founders of modern pedagogy, dies in Goettingen, Germany.

According to Herbart, the goal of education should be the creation of useful members of society. He argued from Platonic perspective that being a productive citizen meant fulfilling one's purpose in society.

In his writings on theology, Johann Friedrich Herbart insisted that the argument from design was a valid, sound argument that proves the existence of something supernatural, though certain knowledge of just what it might be is not possible.
