Pope Clement XIII dies. Pope Clement XIII spent much of his reign dealing with scandals involving the Jesuits and efforts by progressive political forces to reduce the power of the Catholic Church generally.

Whereas previous popes had some success in suppressing dissenting voices, Pope Clement XIII had much worse luck. By the end of his reign, the Jesuits had been entirely banished from Portugal, Spain, and France, all reliably Catholic nations.
