English philosopher Jeremy Bentham is born in London, England. Bentham will become a social and political philosopher who proposes radical ideas about government, social organizations and human nature. Among his radical positions are: abolition of physical punishment (including of children), abolition of slavery, abolition of the death penalty, separation of church and state, equality for women, decriminalization of homosexual acts, and divorce rights.

This ethical philosophy of Bentham's will come to be known as Utilitarianism. Jeremy Bentham argues that creating the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people should be the basis for both personal ethics and state acts.
