Nazi officials begin deporting Jews from the Netherlands to concentration camps in the east. In 1939 there were around 140,000 Jews living in the Netherlands with 25,000 being refugees from Germany and 79,000 living in Amsterdam alone. By 1945, there will only be 35,000 still alive.
The deaths of over 75% of the Jewish population is a higher percentage than most European nations. At the same time, more of the records of Jewish culture and history in the Netherlands survive than in many other European nations.
