The Nazi government in Germany tries and executes Christoph Probst, Hans Scholl, and Sophie Scholl, all members of the White Rose resistance movement based in Munich. Their anonymous leaflet campaign was active at the University of Munich from June 1942 through February 1943. Probst and the Scholl siblings were all students at the University of Munich.
Six leaflets are completed and distributed; the seventh and final is smuggled to the Allies, edited, and air dropped all over Germany. This helps the White Rose group and Sophie Scholl especially become anti-Nazi, anti-fascist icons in post-war Germany.
One thing in particular that solidifies Sophie Scholl's reputation is her defiance at her own trial. According to the records, she says to Roland Freisler, head judge of the Volksgerichtshof (the People's Court):
"You know as well as we do that the war is lost. Why are you so cowardly that you won't admit it?"
