German philosopher Christian Wolff is born in Breslau, Silesia (modern day Wroclaw, Poland). Wolff will write on every major philosophical issue of his time and becomes a major figure in the German Enlightenment. One of Christian Wolff 's primary interests will be the development of natural reason and he argued that the theological truths should be based on mathematical certainty.

Christian Wolff even goes so far as to praise the philosophy of Confucius, citing him as an example of how far human reason could go on moral questions. This sort of thinking will be regarded as impious by theologians and he is ousted from his position at the University of Halle as a result.
