Gestapo Chief Heinrich Müller authorizes Adolf Eichmann to contact the Gauleiter of Upper Silesia about deporting German Jews from his region to sites in the east. The purpose, according to Müller, is to gain experience in mass evacuations of Jews for the sake of future, and much larger, efforts.

As chief of Department 4 of the RSHA (Reich Main Security Office) under Reinhard Heydrich, Müller is responsible for detecting and suppressing all forms of resistance to the Nazi regime. Under his leadership, the Nazis have been enormously successful in infiltrating and destroying several underground networks of communists and socialists.
