Harvard College (later Harvard University) is founded by the Massachusetts Puritans at New Towne. It is the first institution of higher learning established in North America and is originally created to train future ministers.

Initially it simply has the name "New College" and doesn't have any buildings or instructors. It isn't renamed Harvard College until 1639, after deceased Charlestown minister John Harvard.

Before he died John Harvard had bequeathed to the school his entire library and half of the funds in his estate.

The first class of Harvard College won't graduate until 1642.
