British freethinker Charles Bradlaugh is born. As founder of the National Secular Society in 1866, Bradlaugh will play a key role in the development and growth of freethought in 19th century Britain.

He will be elected to the House of Commons as a Liberal in 1880, but at first they will refuse to let him take his seat, in part because of his objections to taking an oath of allegiance. He will finally be allowed to take his seat in 1886, but his fight leaves him financially and emotionally drained.
